Protecting Our Most Vulnerable During the Digital Switchover: What You Need to Know

From now until January 2027, all traditional landline phones in the UK will be moving from the old analogue system to a new digital network. While this change is part of an essential nationwide upgrade, it poses a serious risk to people who rely on telecare alarms connected to analogue phone lines.

That’s why the National Telecare Campaign—launched by BT, Virgin Media O2, the UK Government, and key partners—is working to make sure no one is left behind.

Why the Change Is Happening

The current Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) has served the UK for decades. But as it becomes outdated and harder to maintain, landline providers are switching to digital alternatives to improve reliability and future-proof the system.

For most people, the change will happen automatically with minimal disruption. But telecare users, including many older and vulnerable residents who depend on devices like fall alarms or emergency buttons, could be at risk if they aren’t prepared.

What You Can Do to Help

If you, a family member, or someone you care for uses a telecare alarm, it’s vital to:

Contact your landline provider – Tell them you or someone in your household uses a telecare service.
Check that the telecare alarm is compatible with digital phone lines.
Follow advice provided by your local authority or telecare provider to ensure continuity of service.

Telecare users aren’t always easy to identify. That’s why the campaign is encouraging families, carers, and community support networks to speak up and act early.
